Birth of the Silver Moon
Silver Moon
As your body draws the waters
so does your presence
pull me into my dreams
there you transform my essence
expelling the darkness with your gleams
a silver beacon of the night
in your reflection heaven shines
you guide the wanderers with your light
a crescent unveiled as your body reclines
You are an alchemist’s dream
as all turns to silver in your glow
I let you cast your spell on me
to turn my tide into a gentle flow
This oil painting represents Creation, by ‘Cosmic’ (the female form) giving ‘birth’ to the Silver Moon. The mystery of Creation is reflected in how Cosmic is presented: abstract, her face invisible, radiating powerfully and drifting in galactic space. Cosmic is a combination of Joy and Beauty. She intrigues in the way she curves her body and throws her head backward, in the shape of a crescent. The painting depicts the dualism of the two events of ecstasy in love (making love and giving birth) in an emotional way: strong yet vulnerable.
Cosmic’s power reminds us that Creation is stronger than the Created, something humanity often seems to forget. The Silver Moon is a physical part of Creation, yet it is shown in a distinct silver texture that sets it apart. Cosmic’s golden navel also refers to the order in Creation and it symbolises the philosophical dilemma who created the Creator? The Creator of Cosmic is of a higher order (Gold) than what Cosmic creates (Silver).
Cosmic’s pose provides the painting with depth. Her feet appear to be closer to us and are pointing to the ground, the substance, matter and life of which humanity is her exponent. However, her gaze is turned away from us, to a place deep into space whence she originates and whereto she wishes to return…
The female figure associated with the Silver Moon is well known concept in alchemical teachings : “the moon is a facet of silver. In the ever-parabolic perspective of the practicing alchemist, we know silver is symbolic of clarity, purity, and brilliance. Silver is one of the three foundational metals of the Prima Materia and so the silver-personified moon is prominently placed upon the triune throne of transformation.” Goddesses associated with lunar energy are often defenders of children and are immortal matrons of childbirth. As such, silver holds philosophical traits of the feminine persuasion as well as attributes of intuition, inner wisdom, and contemplation. Both Silver and Moon are symbolic of a subtle strength. The message here is that we ourselves can be flexible enough to be moulded into something better – but strong enough to keep our core integrity intact.
Quotes and References
“The moon does not fight. It attacks no one. It does not worry. It does not try to crush others. It keeps to its course, but by its very nature, it gently influences. What other body could pull an entire ocean from shore to shore? The moon is faithful to its nature and its power is never diminished.”
Ming-Dao Deng (Everyday Tao: Living with Balance and Harmony, 1996)
“The moon teaches us that darkness can’t hide the beauty of life if we know how to reflect beauty”
Debasish Mridha
